Celebrities are Officially Turning on Smart Glasses
Singer Lorde at a music festival called out smart glasses. Stopped short of calling out Meta by name specifically probably due to potential lawsuit, but it seems celebrities are starting to turn on smart glasses let alone AI altogether. Here's what Lorde said:
"Increasingly in our world it gets harder and harder to know what is real. You don’t know if someone is wearing sunglasses or if they’re wearing those fucked up fucking.… Can I just say, for the record, 'F*ck the Glasses'. Don’t get the glasses. Not sexy"
From paying attention to consumer technology for quite some time, there's a scale that which I think a lot of companies, tech companies specifically, try to fall within.
On one side, we have a negative side, representing unfavorable cultural public perception. On the other side, there are companies that are absolutely beloved within culture and public perception. Often, the companies that lean more on the positive side aren't trying to push cultural boundaries with technology. They wait to see if culture accepts it. That is a company who is a little bit slower to innovate, but they adjust with what culture has started to deem acceptable first before they try to sell a product to customers. It's safe.
I believe Meta is constantly on the negative side. Meta swings for the fences and buys celebrities to help sway the culture of society. Apple on the other hand tries to be on the positive side. Playing it safe, waiting and watching to see what society accepts. Call it boring, but it's proven successful for Apple.
Google used to lean more on the Meta side back in the "glasshole" days. I believe Google has learned it's lesson and leans more on the neutral side. Google is okay to be the flagship of the future, but they still take their brand incredibly seriously. It's why Pixel has seen such success not only from Western celebrities and society, but internationally as well. It's the tech purist and geekbench geeks that Google seems to have lost their courtship.
At this rate, Google is starting to look more like a genius now that they are not releasing their own smart glasses. Again, Google has learned their lesson from their previous foray into smart glasses. It's Apple that is probably having internal conversations about what they're going to do with their rumor to smart glasses. At this point. They may need to pivot from using cameras altogether.
